Council

Our Council

In 2008 the congregation of Cataraqui United church; after careful consideration, changed the administrative structure to the Council System. Committees in the council include chairs of finance, faith formation, worship, membership, social, ministry and personnel as well as a representative from the United Church Women, a Presbytery representative, the church administrator, the council chair and the minister.

We believe the Council structure is a good match for our family church. It has enabled committees to proceed in an effective, efficient manner with committee chairs reporting activities at the council meeting. Council executive, consisting of the chair, church administrator and two committee chairs may meet to plan and bring recommendations to the next council meeting.

Meetings are held at least quarterly, and may be held more frequently at the call of the chair.

Social Committee

We believe that fellowship is an important part of our church family. The chair of the social committee reports at the council meeting on the proposed activities for the upcoming year, the budget required and the success of the various events. Present social activities include Craft and Conversation, Cards and Games Evening, and Muffin Sundays. Plans include introducing a Men’s breakfast and other social events.

Finance Committee

We believe in responsible stewardship and effective resource management. Within the scope of the chair of finance is the envelope steward, who ensures that each person receives a receipt for tax purposes on their annual giving and an accounting clerk. The trustees who oversee invested monies. In addition there is the property committee who maintains the church and may conduct fundraising events. The fundraising committee raises funds by hosting dinners, lunches and fun events.

Ministry and Personnel Committee

We believe staff are deserving of a workplace where each person is treated with respect and dignity. This committee provides support and guidance to the staff in the church including the minister.

Membership

We believe belonging to a church family may bring joy and peace. We welcome new comers. The membership committee is multifaceted and includes input from Faith Formation, Worship and the Social Committees as well as the administrative officer.

Faith Formation

We believe that a Sunday School where children are encouraged to ask questions and are responded to in a loving manner builds a solid foundation for their future. This committee also offers Bible study and invites guest speakers with a broad interest appeal.

Worship

We believe that worship provides one of many opportunities for people to travel on their spiritual journey. Communion is served on a monthly basis and children are welcome at the table. Sermons are meaningful and generally follow a traditional format.

Cataraqui United Church entered into a period of Interim Ministry and now as we near the end of that period we have done a joint needs assessment and have begun our search for a new minister.  If you are a qualified candidate, and have additional questions, please contact our Search Committee or e-mail us at cataraquichurch@aol.com.
